Local Grant to Restore Northern Bobwhite Quail Habitat

Local Grant to Restore Northern Bobwhite Quail Habitat

”Bob…WHITE!!” There’s no mistaking this native game bird when it sings out its name in our fields and forests in Spring and Summer, just as it has for thousands of years. But sadly, their call is being heard less frequently throughout the Carolinas. In fact, Chesterfield County is a High Priority area for restoring Quail habitat as part of the National Bobwhite Conservation and Grasslands Initiative.

Fortunately, Quail populations are doing well in the fields and woods at our 1,600-acre Southern 8ths Preserve.

Carolina Wildlands Foundation is working to protect and restore native grasslands, thickets and woodlands for Bobwhite Quail in Chesterfield County, and the native plants and animals that share this habitat. With a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, we are sharing this knowledge with our neighbors to expand and fund suitable quail habitat in the Thompson Creek watershed.

How it Works

The grant helps CWF to cover the costs for other landowners to plant and manage more native grasslands and trees as Quail habitat and food sources in the Thompson Creek watershed.

Starting the Conversation.
Our staff identifies properties in our area that have good Quail habitat potential, and we reach out to landowners like you to learn if you would consider planting native grasses, wildflowers and trees on your land. We invite you for a tour of our habitat areas to learn firsthand how it works.

Developing a Habitat Restoration Plan.
If you agree to move forward, our staff works directly with you to develop a habitat restoration plan that you approve for your property, at our cost. This includes a site design, planting and seeding plan for native grass and wildflower species that provide good food and cover for Quail.

Installing the Habitat.
In Fall or Spring our staff will hire a qualified team to prepare your site, purchase and add seeds and trees according to the plan, and ensure that the site prep, seeding and planting are done properly and to your satisfaction.

Maintaining the Habitat
The following year is a crucial grow-in period. Our staff will work with the land management team to ensure that the desired plants are doing well, and that any invasive species are kept under control.

Then….
We listen for the sound of success – “Bob…WHITE!!” and look for the birds. When it’s all said and done, you will be part of a group of Chesterfield County landowners who are doing their part to bring back good habitat for Northern Bobwhite Quail, and the rich diversity of native plants and wildlife that share their habitat.
