November 2024 – Game Camera Study
November brought another remarkable month to the Game Camera study at the Carolina Wildlands with abundant wildlife activity captured on our cameras. White-tailed Deer and bobcats were once again frequently sighted, with one particularly fascinating sequence showing a bobcat carrying an eastern cottontail rabbit as its dinner.
We recorded 43 Coyote and 76 Northern Raccoon sightings. One of our favorites, the fox species made their presence known: the Red Fox appeared four times, while the elusive Gray Fox was spotted once. The piebald doe, affectionately known as “Paintjob,” was observed an 22 times throughout the month.
Mid-November brought special appearances from a beaver and an otter, species we hadn’t seen in months. The beaver last appeared on camera in early September, while the otter hadn’t been spotted since late May. We were happy to have them show up on camera again.
Our cameras also captured a variety of bird species, including northern Bobwhite Quail, Blue Jays, Northern Flickers, Northern Cardinals, Common Grackles, Wood Thrush, Mourning Doves, Great Blue Herons, and several sparrow species. While primarily set up to detect mammal movements, the cameras offer a wonderful opportunity to monitor visiting birds as well.
November’s diverse sightings highlight the richness of life in the Carolina Wildlands, and we look forward to seeing what the coming months will bring!
