January 2025 – Game Camera Study

Happy New Year from the fauna at Carolina Wildlands Foundation! This month we were visited by all of our most frequently seen faces, plus a few visitors. This month we had over one hundred White-tailed Deer sightings with Northern Raccoons following in at a close second. There were a few coyote camera shots, and many Eastern Cottontail sightings as well.

Some of our interesting more unusual camera captures this month were the River Otter and Striped Skunk. This otter was seen walking away from one of our ponds. There were three different skunks seen this month with two sightings being in the same night. These two different skunks show just how interesting their different physical traits can be through patterns and coloration.

Paintjob was seen again leading her group of fellow White-tailed Deer and many different Fox Squirrels stopped to pose for a picture, as usual! Although we did not have any Red Fox sightings in the month of January, the gray Fox was seen quite a lot. There was a total of 13 different camera sightings of this species.

Various sparrows, Northern Cardinals, American Robins, Blue jays, and Tufted Titmouse were caught resting and looking for food in front of the cameras. Some of photos even show the birds in the snow during our one snow day in South Carolina this winter. One Great Blue Heron was seen on camera right before taking flight, which resulted in a great camera shot capturing the wingspan of this interesting bird.
