December 2024 – Game Camera Study
During this holiday season, it seems like each mammal at Carolina Wildlands Foundation was on the nice list. We had our usual visits of White-tailed deer and Eastern Cottontails. We were able to capture pictures of small groups of coyotes and some pretty large group of turkeys. This month we had three separate visits from a Red Fox and one from a Gray Fox. Bobcats were spotted walking around the property in pairs and many Fox Squirrels stopped to pose for a picture. Paintjob was caught on camera leading her small group of other female White-tailed deer.
One of our most interesting game camera highlights this month is a Barred Owl in one of the ponds. This species is known to have a territorial call during the night to warn possible intruders. It is also said that they could use their call to frighten prey out of hiding. With their amazing auditory abilities, they can locate their prey in complete darkness.
We had one visit from a Striped Skunk. A skunk had not been caught on camera since early October, so we were excited to see him stop by this last week of December.
The birds caught on camera this month were Northern Flickers, Blue Jays, American Robins, Common Grackles, Great Blue Herons, and a few different Sparrows.
